Pancakes

One time I was watching movie with Marcelo's family and it featured this American family sitting at the breakfast table with a big stack of fresh pancakes. Regina got really excited and curious about them, so I said that I'd make a batch sometime for her and the rest of the family to try. Yesterday I finally walked the walk and whipped out a pretty solid batch of pancakes for dinner. I even drew little designs in the batter like my dad used to do when I was little. It was interesting trying to explain how to eat pancakes...Normally for dinner Chileans eat bread with some toppings, and that is it along with some tea. No forks are necessary, so when I was getting ready to eat my pancake and realized that Marcelo's mom had not put forks down it made sense, even though it seemed a bit odd at first. While I grabbed some forks, I came back to the table to see Regina and Tomas putting the scrambled eggs and bacon on top of their pancakes and eating it with their hands. Again, they were simply treating the pancakes like bread, which is what they are used to. In the end I think they got the idea that pancakes are more like dessert than anything else, and even though they only ate about 1.5 a piece they told me that they enjoyed them and wanted to try some other types of new food sometime. I enjoy sharing aspects of my life with them, since they do that with me every day without even realizing it. It also felt comforting to eat some food that was something that I'd eaten throughout my childhood.
