Now that the weather is nice I've been making my walk home a little more leisurely. There is this one road that leads right by some horses and cows that I take now because it makes me feel like I'm on a farm.
So, I went to a thrift store the other day to get some clothes to get nice and dirty for the house building project this weekend. I was expecting to find some funky Chilean t-shirts and sweatshirts that I could eventually wear in the US and feel original. Therefore, I was a little surprised to find things like Stanford sweatshirts, a Special Olympics t-shirt, something from some college in Wisconsin...Everything was apparently shipped from America. Very boring for me, but apparently trendy and desirable to the Chileans.
I have been starting to actively study Spanish more, and I can already tell how it's got me using certain words correctly for the first time since I arrived. Since I am not necessary studying Spanish for a specific class, but more for my entire life that surrounds school, my motivations are different this time around.
Every week I meet more and more people. One day walking to class I ran into six Chilean students that I knew. For me that's a big deal at least...Poco a poco is my motto right now, little by little I meet new people, learn new words, try new foods, and get accustomed to new social norms like kissing everyone on the cheek when I say goodbye. It's interesting for me to notice the little steps along the way and see how they will hopefully amount to some pretty significant changes in my life.
Right now I am about to leave to go out and enjoy the fact that I don't have classes on Fridays! I don't really know what I'll be doing or when I'll get home, but it's with two very nice gringos so it should be fun : )
